Icon of the era ; 2000s

 Britney Spears

Britney Spears is a famous singer - songwriter known for singles such as baby one more time and oops i did it again, among other hit songs. She has sold over 100 million records worldwide and rose to fame in the 2000s, earning her the title of the ‘princess of pop’.

Born on the 2nd december 1981, Britney first entered the industry at aged 14 which subjected her to the pitfalls of fame almost straight away. Many people attribute this to her well known breakdown in 2007, due to mounting pressures on her and how she was forced to perform multiple live shows one after the other. Constantly being in the public eye and having her life on display by paparazzi also played a part.

This led to Britneys court case where she was ruled mentally unstable and went in to a conservator ship ruled by her father, meaning he had full control of her life and meant she was unable to make decisions for herself or look after her children. A harrowing documentary named ‘Framing Britney Spears’ was made in order to expose light on how Britney is essentially held hostage by her father, which sparked outrage amongst her fans and began the campaign “free britney”.However, whether the documentary is fully accurate or the details of her conservatorship fully confirmed is unsure as her life is so well hidden.

Despite her struggles, this only proves how human Britney is and that being famous and rich doesn’t excuse you of abuse, trauma or bad mental health. In terms of her fashion in the late 90s and 2000s, she remained a popular figure of inspiration. From full juicy couture tracksuits to low rise jeans and skirts , Britney pioneered the y2k trends we know and that have recently been coming back in to fashion. She celebrated women’s curves with low rise jeans and belly chains , helping the more ‘boxy’ muscular  figure come in to fashion after the ‘heroin chic’ of the 90s catwalks. Her music videos also featured iconic looks such as the school girl outfit she wore in hit me baby one more time, inspiring school girls across the world to tie up their shirts and wear mini skirts.

Her look at the 2001 VMA s also remains superior, wear she wore a real life snake as a scarf whilst performing. Her bohemian skirt and top also completed the look and made flowy fabrics and rich colours more prominent in the fashion industry.

Despite her troubles, Britney remains the princess of pop and a prominent figure in early 2000s fashion.
