Icon of the era ; 1960s

 Twiggy

Now formally known as Dame Lesley Lawson, she was coined the nickname ‘twiggy’, referring to her slim frame and androgynous look she was known for with big eyes and short hair. She rose to fame and became the face of a decade defined by mod culture, hippie power and all in all- the swinging 60s.

Twiggy’s androgynous look subverted a time where femininity was exclusive to women and an expectation carried over from the 50s- of the ideal , made up woman. Her short hair went against stereotypes and her slim, boyish figure created a new ideal body type that contrasted to the 50s celebration of curves.

The 60s made way for movements and transgressions against time that are still relevant to today. Women dropped long hems for mini skirts and ‘go go’ boots that clung to the leg in bold shades. The monochromatic look also became popular with black and white futuristic garments referencing mod culture. Twiggy helped transcend these outfits, and helped popularise trends that are still frequented throughout modern times.

She also brought in new expectations of how a woman can look and also how male fashion has influenced women’s trends. With the skinny, boyish figure still relevant in models today and seen as a goal body type.
